Company History

As the city of Honolulu continued to grow, the Fujieki brothers decided to expand their business outside the Kakaako district.  In 1940, they opened their first market, which was established as the first Star Market store.  By 1949, the chain had four stores, each offering a complete line of groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, liquor, frozen food and household merchandise.  The company continued to grow over the years with several other locations opening throughout Oahu.  This growth eventually expanded to the neighboring island with stores opening on Maui and Kauai.

Today, the Company continues to operate stores on Oahu, Maui and Kauai.  Star Market prides itself in offering full service grocery stores with a local flare and has a great loyal customer base.  The Company continues to move forward with the industry and is always looking for better ways to utilize technology to improve service to its customers.

Being responsive to customers is what sets Star apart from the competition.  In the Company’s commitment to “taking care of its customers’ needs” we are particularly proud of the wide offering of products we have at Star.  We must listen to our customers in order to provide them with the products and services they deserve.  The variety of products we carry is an important way in which we can demonstrate our commitment.  In recent years the company has developed several programs to improve our product offering and provide our customers with the items they want in these changing times.  Some of our programs are:

  • Healthy Living at Star Markets – We have increased our offering of products that are healthier in nature and integrated them throughout our stores and identified them with different colored labels to make shopping easier for our customers.
  • Foods of the World Selection – Appeals to a wide range of ethnic and gourmet shoppers.
  • Expanded Beer/Wine and Liquor Selections.
  • Expanded Cheese Selections.
  • Expanded Nutritional Offerings.
  • Expanded Organic Produce.
  • Integrated General Merchandise throughout the store
  • Improved Service Deli’s – Offering salad bars and self service hot foods.

All these new items and offerings come from listening to our customers.  To make sure we continue to listen to the needs and desires of our customers we have also developed a customer request program that provides us with a direct pipeline to our customers so we can make sure we are taking care of them.

What really sets Star apart from the competition, however, is its Five Star Employees.  Our almost 700-member team does its best to serve the customer the way customers would like to be served.  Our goal is to offer a five Star shopping experience every time a customer shops at Star Market.  Some things should never change, and the interesting thing about our goal today is, as it was with Tsuenjiro, Mika and their sons during the early years of the company, we still emphasize old-fashion values of friendly, courteous service, in a neighborly atmosphere with fair prices.
